For the final practical session at the CP3 Conference, delegates worked in small groups planning, shooting and editing a three minute film based on a short story.
With some of the excellent buildings available at the University of Leicester it was possible to shoot in a variety of locations to construct our story. Working with Damaris from CLEO and Brigette from Moor House School in Oxted we spent four hours collecting enough footage to convey a fair amount of the story.
However, the real skill was in the editing and this proved to be extremely challenging, taking us almost as long as the filming itself. We did manage to piece together our work pretty well and the overall result was fairly pleasing, despite some dodgy acting from the male member of the group!
Careful planning was a key aspect of the process and this is something that's easy to forget in a classroom situation. Likewise, the importance of editing.
Day Four ended with a presentation of all 16 films created by the delegates at CP3. There were a wide variety of interpretations of the text and some really impressive film-making.
The task was an extremely challenging one for delegates both in technical and practical terms, but it also helped us to think about how the process of film-making can be tackled by our students.

Podcasting and Sound & Vision
Unfortunately David Baugh http://213.232.94.135/dv/news.php was ill so he was unable to make it to the podcasting session, which was a bit of a blow as I'd been looking forward to meeting him after using his web site quite a lot in the last year.
However, the Film Ed crew did a great session in subbing and helped us all to create a brief podcast. Clearly we can develop the work started last year much further and with our new Mac laptops the whole process should be a lot easier than we found it in Computer Club.
Tom Barrance from Media Ed Wales http://www.mediaedwales.org.uk/ ran an excellent session on Sound and Vision and suggested some interesting activities for use with pupils. Again, there were clear implications for our practice at Kellett and I'll definitely be adding some of Tom's ideas to our planning in the forthcoming year.

Day 4 - Film Task
More about day three later!
Today's the big day as we're now in groups preparing to film an interpretation of ED Jephry's short story Dissolution... no, nobody here had heard of him either.
We've got seven hours to film and edit a three minute film...sound easy? Well, the task is going to be made slightly harder by the fact that the rain has continued to pour here in the UK, so there will be no sunshine shots!
Will let you know how we get on later.

CP3 Day 3
It's Podcasting this morning followed by a video-editing session this afternoon. I'm looking forward to learning more about podcasting as we had a few technical glitches with the one created in Computer Club!
As for the quiz it's fair to say that the staff on my team from other schools were not up to Kellett standards and I was unable to lead the team to victory. Happily we did get a prize for last place...

CP3 Conference
Instead of dodging the showers in the UK I'm attending Film Education's CP3 Conference. Having warmed up with a session using iLife, we were then treated to a keynote speech by Ben Gibson from the London Film School.
Ben talked about the theory and practice of film-making arguing that they are much more related than many think.
Sessions on Day Two began with a reflection of how teachers and professionals from cinema can work together and what issues often occur.
It was then time for some hands on work as we looked at different ways of tackling images and creating movies from paintings... a great activity that will find it's way into our classrooms at some point in the near future!
A look at the new Literacy Framework was a breath of fresh air and did more to validate the changes we are making to the way ICT is used within the curriculum at Kellett. Year 5 students will be pleased to note that The Piano featured strongly within this presentation... well done to Miss Bradley and Mr Hulbert!!
An afternoon investigating the possibilites of games technology followed. Clearly we have already made good progress here with our work on Rollercoaster Tycoon and the Literacy work that supported it. We need to enhance our games work further down the school, even though Badger Trails continues to be a great success at Year 3.
Anyway, I'll be hoping to report that I upheld the Kellett tradition in the Quiz Night tonight!!

New Building
On Saturday the teaching staff took the opportunity to tour the new building. Sadly, the lifts have not yet had their final inspection which meant we all had to walk to the very top before we could begin the tour!
It was very exciting to see all the new rooms, especially the Library Study Room which will be fully equipped with Macbooks during the next two months.
After spending quite a lot of time viewing the plans over the last six months I was surprised how big many of the rooms were, although they will be smaller when the furniture arrives.
We also have over 100 new computers arriving over the next two months, so it will be a busy time for all involved.

Pivot Stickfigure Animator
Animation within the classroom opens up huge possibilities in terms of literacy, creativity and general ICT skills. Students at Kellett have the opportunity to create animations throughout the school, culminating in a six week project in Year 5.
A fun way of getting started with animation is with Pivot Stickfigure Animator. Year Three are currently having fun with this piece of software, creating all sorts of weird and wonderful animations. One of the great things about Stickfigure is that it's absolutely free!!

Good to see that Google Earth have updated their images of Hong Kong. In particular, the images of Kellett are now more recent and clearly show the extension, whereas before the extension was not there!
Google Earth 4 is now available (free of charge!) and it is well worth upgrading, or downloading if you don't have it already. The ability to tilt the images add a new dimension to the software, particularly when looking at areas such as The Peak.

P6 Show... A Load of Rubbish??
No, of course it wasn't!
Well done to all those involved in the P6 show. A Load of Rubbish was great fun from start to finish with some brilliant acting thrown in. A most enjoyable evening.

A Hard Days Tycooning
P5 have begun their project on Rollercoaster Tycoon. They are using the management simulation to design and run an amusement park.
The parks have been constructed really quickly and guests have flocked to them. Problems have arisen with questions over construction and the hiring of staff, but in the most part there have been no disasters. One student managed to lose around 50 guests whilst another cruelly sacked a handy man after less than a day's work!!
Work has been planned in Literacy to run alongside the project covering aspects such as persuasive writing and information texts. Students have responded very positively to the project, often returning to the ICT room in their own time to continue building their parks.
